Leave Those Wretched People Alone!

Suddenly Rebecca spotted two big brown eyes peering over the edge of the deck. “What are you doing?” a tiny voice asked. “Why did you build this great, big house?”
Rebecca knelt at the edge of the deck and took the little girl’s hands into her own. “The water is going to rise higher and higher until all the houses will be washed away.”
Keiah gazed at her, clearly not comprehending. “You mean my feet will get wet, and I’m not even playing by the lake shore?”
“Oh, honey, it will be much worse than that. It’s as if all the houses in all the world are suddenly thrown into a big, big lake.”

“And all the trees, to.” Mairekah added, kneeling on the other side of Rebecca.
Keiah’s eyes grew round. “And all the people to? And my puppy?”

“Oh, honey, I wish it were not so. But you can be safe. You and your Mommy and Daddy.”

“And your puppy, to, “ Mairekah interrupted.

Rebecca smiled at her. “ You see, we built this big ark--”

“Keiah! How many times have I told you not to go near those wretched people, and now you are talking to them!”
A brawny hand yanked the small child up by the collar of her frock
Mairekah raced into their own cottage and flung herself weeping on her own bed.
